Le mangeur de sons, a story of an ogre who loves to eat ugly sounds, by Christos Ortiz (illustrated by Lauranne Quentric, Éditions les 400 coups, 32 pages, $16.95), will delight kids ages 5 and up. The ogre is very popular because he eats the sounds of whining children, so moms love him, and he eats the raging of angry parents, so kids love him. But he especially loves to eat traffic noise, of which there is a growing amount. Eventually, there is so much traffic noise that the ogre grows very fat and almost dies. The townspeople want to save their favourite ogre, so they go on a “sound diet.” They reduce traffic, and start walking and riding bikes everywhere, and they are all amazed at the quiet, natural sounds they now hear.
